Driving the RoadScout technology is a dedicated software system to manage and analyse the vast quantities of surface and subsurface information collected. The Portal4D software system is the first GPR software system to incorporate analysis of a sliding 3D volume. The result is that the full richness of the surface and subsurface data can be displayed (including arbitrary slicing and real time iso-surfaces) without the need to load sections of the road. Instead the users can move smoothly through an entire road - no matter how long it is.

Other key features are:

  • The users can navigate through a 3D world with the collected data display as if they were physically on the road.
  • Automatic crack detection and road surface condition reporting.
  • Automatic layer detection, changes of construction and patching in subsurface.
  • A user-friendly interface will allow the customers to manipulate the data via cutting and other surface manipulation tools to expose road layers and reveal any issues.
  • Multiple data sets can be combined, improving understanding of road construction including extensions.
  • The software simultaneously displays the surface, subsurface, six-way camera and positioning information in the one package achieving a more complete understanding of the pavement condition.
  • In topography correlation mode, 3D surface and subsurface imaging is achieved, in conjunction to displaying the true orientation and curve of the road.
  • Layers and features can be identified and tagged for later export.
  • A modular design for the visualization package allows flexible, customer driven software improvement (via plug-ins). The result is that the software engine’s capabilities can be expanded to specific customer needs.
  • The software engine is configured to include automated feature detection algorithms, reducing the amount of manual interpretation of the data, thus minimizing data collection and analysis costs.
  • Key road statistics and other information are storable to a database. This can be extended to feed into a customer's specific database, improving integration with existing road maintenance systems.

Case studies

A MS Word document summary report is produced to provide the following information:

  • Generalities of the data collected, information of how many lanes were scanned and starting and ending points of the scan (usually intersections);
  • Gazettal chainages or any other reference points used by the customers;
  • Description of the points used to align the data gathered according to the positioning system of the customer.
